OUR WORK
Vanishing Treasures aims to better understand the impact of climate change on snow leopards, bengal tigers and on mountain gorillas to improve protection of these ever-diminishing species while supporting local mountain communities who live alongside them.
Snow Leopards and climate change
The snow leopard Panthera uncia is a large cat which inhabits high altitude, rugged mountain landscapes of Central and South Asia and feeds on mountain ungulates including the Asiatic ibex, argali sheep, blue sheep and a variety of other species.
Despite living in very remote regions, the snow leopard is now threatened by increasing human encroachment and the effects of climate change.
Royal Bengal Tigers and climate change
The Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is one of the most endangered carnivores on the planet, with habitat loss, prey depletion and poaching being major causes of population decline.
These animals require large and intact habitat landscapes to support viable populations. Climate change threatens both the Bengal Tiger and local communities in these landscapes, including in the mountainous country of Bhutan.
Mountain Gorillas and climate change
The mountain gorilla (G. b. beringei) is one of our closest relatives and shares 98% of its DNA with humans. About 1000 individuals now remain within two, isolated mountainous forest areas within the Central Albertine Rift of Eastern Africa.
A combination of ensnaring in ropes and wires, habitat loss and degradation, civil unrest, disease and now climate change threaten this iconic and critically Endangered mountain species.
WHERE WE WORK
STAKEHOLDERS WE WORK WITH
- Local communities: Strengthening ownership and capacity for the management and use of wildlife, while improving livelihoods.
